Invest for impact: What’s more important than ROI?

“I care deeply about the social impact of my investments. Financial returns are vital but investing in people and their growth helps contribute to a more equitable economy.”

LEAP speaker Vusi Thembekwayo (Investor and Managing Partner at MyGrowthFund Venture Partners) leads a team of venture capital investors who back African founders – with mentorship as well as capital. They’re on a mission to invest in 100 high-growth ventures by 2030, and drive positive change at the same time.

We asked Vusi why investors should care about the impact their portfolio has on the economy and society around them – and what he wishes everyone knew about VC investing.

The business world is hectic right now. There's just so much noise out there, especially in tech. What steps do you take to cut through the noise and recognise where the truly valuable opportunities lie?

“The business world today is rapidly changing and ever evolving. I dare say it can also be unforgiving in the face of missed opportunities – especially in tech. I prioritise immersive research and building relationships to identify valuable opportunities. By engaging with industry experts and continuously educating myself, I can filter out the noise.

“I also advocate for using data-driven insights to guide decisions and remain adaptable, so I can pivot to opportunities that align with my vision and the market's needs.”

As an investor, can you recall any particular moment(s) when you felt you really understood your own purpose?

“I can recall a pivotal moment early in my career when I helped a struggling entrepreneur secure their first round of funding. Witnessing their transformation and subsequent success made me realise my desire to empower others. This experience solidified my understanding that my purpose lies in nurturing potential and helping individuals overcome barriers to achieve their dreams.”

What's one thing you care about more than financial ROI?

“I care deeply about the social impact of my investments. For me, it's about creating sustainable change and empowering communities. Financial returns are vital but investing in people and their growth helps contribute to a more equitable economy.”

Why should investors care about the impact they're having on the world via their portfolio?

“Investors have a unique opportunity to shape the future. They should care about the impact of their portfolios because every investment has the power to influence social change, drive innovation, and support marginalised communities. By prioritising companies that align with ethical and societal values, investors can contribute to a legacy that transcends financial gains.”

What's one thing you wish everyone knew about the world of venture capital?

“That it’s not just about the money. It’s about building relationships, understanding the entrepreneurial journey, and being a supportive partner. Good VCs are mentors and advisors who provide guidance and resources to help founders succeed – we’re not just financiers.”

Finally, what’s most exciting to you about LEAP?

“The energy of like-minded entrepreneurs and investors coming together to share experiences, learn from each other, and collaborate is inspiring. The conversations that emerge, the stories shared, and the collective impact we can make in our communities.”
